DLP® Lamp Installation

Your DLP TV's source of light comes from a lamp similar to that used in film or front projectors. Although the lamp is long lasting, it may need to be replaced eventually.

When should the lamp be replaced?

You probably need a new lamp if there is no picture, but you can hear audio and the power light on the front of the TV does the following; blinks, pauses for about a minute, blinks again, pauses again, and then flashes for about 1 minute. These symptoms may also occur if the lamp unit is not seated properly or the lamp unit access door is ajar.

How do I replace the Lamp Unit on my DLP TV?

The lamp unit has been designed to make installation as easy as possible, but if you don't follow the directions, there is a risk of burn injury or electric shock. If you don't feel comfortable replacing the lamp, call 866-723-6486 to have a qualified technician install the new lamp unit (a fee will apply).

IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS:

Before you begin, make sure you read and understand these instructions. If you need clarification, call 866-723-6486 for help. You must follow all the instructions step by step. We cannot be held responsible for failure to adhere to the safety measures described herein, the safety measures on the back panel of the TV, and other reasonable safety practices and precautions. NOTE: Lamp contains a small amount of mercury which can be considered hazardous if improperly handled or disposed. Take proper precautions to ensure that the lamp does not break during handling. Contact the applicable local governmental office and your current waste removal provider for assistance in determining the appropriate disposal method in your area.

Wait 30 Minutes before you replace the lamp! The lamp's temperature can reach 200 degrees so can be very hot unless allowed to cool.

  • Don't remove the lamp access door or remove the inoperative lamp unit until you have a replacement lamp (this will reduce the risk that children or pets will come into contact with the hot lamp, and will keep foreign objects and dust out of the lamp unit).

  • Never allow children or pets to play with the lamp access door at any time.

  • Use only a genuine RCA lamp replacement unit.

  • There are no user serviceable parts within the lamp unit itself. Don't attempt to repair the lamp unit – attempting to do so may cause injury, and will void your warranty.

You may need the following to get started:

  • Flat-head Screwdriver

  • Flashlight

  • Replacement lamp unit and lamp unit carton

Step 1:

Unplug your TV and allow the lamp to cool thoroughly (for at least 30 minutes) before you remove the burned out lamp. If you do not wait at least 30 minutes, you risk getting injured! Place the power cord far away from the TV to help ensure that it will not be plugged in if you walk away from the TV, or when you are waiting for the lamp to cool down, or when you are installing the new lamp.

Step 2:

After 30 minutes, locate the Lamp Unit Access Door. This door is on the back of your TV on the right side. Read the precautions on the door (you may need a flashlight).

Step 3:

Remove the Lamp Unit Access Door by loosening the single captive screw in the back and pressing against the two tabs as shown. Your door may swing from the left or top. You do not need to remove the screw, just loosen it. Note: Don't use a coin to loosen the screw because the coin could fall into the TV. Once the door is off, carefully set it aside so it will not be stepped on or get dirty.

Step 4:

You will now see the Lamp Unit once the door has been removed. It will have two screws. Loosen these two screws. Do not remove the screws, just loosen them. Note: Do not attempt to repair the lamp. Do not open the lamp assembly unit - leave the lamp in its casing.

Step 5:

You are now ready to remove the Lamp Unit. The Lamp Unit may have a handle on it. If it does, grasp the top & bottom flange (as shown) or handle (if your unit has one) and gently pull the Lamp Unit away from inside the TV. As you remove the lamp, pay attention to how the lamp fits so that you can use the proper orientation when you're installing the new Lamp Unit.

Step 6:

Now you are ready to insert the new Lamp Unit. Make sure the new Lamp Unit is oriented properly and gently slide it into the lamp access opening as far as it will go (it fits snugly). Do not touch the lamp glass and keep foreign objects and dust out of the Lamp Unit.

Step 7:

Tighten the two screws on the New Lamp Unit to securely fasten it inside the TV.

Step 8:

Replace the lamp access door and tighten the screw. (Note that the TV will not turn on unless the door is in place and properly attached).

Step 9:

Place the old Lamp Unit back into the box in which the new Lamp Unit was packaged. Properly dispose of the old Lamp Unit. Or, if under warranty, return for credit per the instructions provided when it was ordered.

Step 10:

Plug-in the TV and turn it on. After the TV warms up for about 60 seconds, tune to a channel that you normally receive and you should see a picture. If you do not, try another channel, ensure the access door is closed and that there is power to the TV. If you still do not have a picture, unplug your TV then return to Step 2 and make sure that the Lamp Unit is fully seated in the housing.
